Chapter Six

RONE

I gave Cammie space to herself in the days leading up to the celebration dinner.

During the day, I had my work to keep my mind busy. I made sure the base functioned and I communicated with soldiers from the moon bases and the eastern and western outposts. The fact that we still couldn’t locate General Toth only added to my annoyance.

Cammie also kept busy during the day. She spent her time in the base’s learning hall, poring over the computer screen to teach herself Javorian, Xaxos’ primary language. It was almost enough to convince anyone who didn’t know her true feelings that she was settling into her new role on this planet.

Nights were the hardest. I spent extra hours in the training yard, practicing drills with the soldiers until the sun went down and Xaxos’ nine moons shone bright in the night sky.

Did I ever show Cammie the nine moons? I think she’d be impressed. Her planet only had one satellite.

When the hour grew late, that’s when I finally went up to my quarters.

Tonight, I found her asleep on my bed. She fell asleep reading one of the paperback books she brought with her from Earth. It lay on her chest, spine down.

Careful not to disturb her, I lifted the book and set it on the table. Cammie turned over in her sleep and curled on her side. The shorts she slept in drew up past her thighs, revealing the smooth curve of her backside.

I felt myself getting hard. I pulled the sheet over her legs and grabbed a spare blanket for me to sleep in the chair in the other room.

She was beautiful even in her sleep. I wanted to join her in the bed, feel her against me like the last time I had her in my arms and kissed her. I took a cool shower instead and resigned myself to the hardback chair in the adjoining room.

The push-pull aspect that occurred when she and I were together was enough to make me consider moving back into the barracks with the newly recruited soldiers.

But then they would know the truth. Things weren’t going so well between their commander and his human mate.
